For professionals
Professional briefing
A working reference for people who deal with this as part of their job: safeguarding leads, teachers, youth workers, police, fraud teams, journalists and researchers. It assumes you may never have used Roblox.
The risk areas at a glance
| Risk | Who is affected | Strongest single indicator | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grooming and sexual exploitation | Children and younger teenagers | Someone met in a game asks the child to move to another app | Part 1 |
| Coercive networks (764 and similar) | Isolated children and teenagers | Self-harm with carved names or symbols; sudden secrecy and fear | Part 1 |
| Theft and fraud | Any child with items or a payment card on the account | Unexplained purchases, or an account email that has been changed | Part 2 |
| Status pressure and bullying | Older children and younger teenagers | Insistent requests for specific avatar items; "poor" used as an insult | Part 3 |
| Crews, harassment and doxxing | Older children and teenagers | "Not allowed" to talk about an online group; fear of leaving it | Part 4 |
| In-game cons | Younger children especially | Distress after a "trade"; reluctance to say what happened | Part 5 |
Indicators
The "who is affected" column above is a general impression, not a measured age range. No single item below proves anything. A cluster, or a sudden change, is what matters.
Behavioural
- New secrecy about a device, or playing only when alone.
- A new online friend who is older, or whose age is vague, mentioned often or pointedly not at all.
- Distress or anger out of proportion when access is removed.
- Being awake and online at unusual hours, suggesting contact with another time zone.
- Vocabulary from the glossary appearing suddenly, especially crew and trading terms.
- Statements such as "I'm not allowed to say" or "they'll expose me".
Material
- Robux, expensive avatar items or gift cards the child cannot account for.
- Charges on a family card to unfamiliar merchants, or cryptocurrency purchases.
- A second or hidden account; new apps, particularly Discord, installed without discussion.
- Antivirus software switched off, or unfamiliar programs installed "for the game".
Physical and urgent
- Cuts or marks forming letters, names, numbers or symbols. This is a recognised signature of coercive networks and should be treated as an emergency safeguarding concern rather than as ordinary self-harm.
- Harm to pets, or a child describing being told to hurt themselves or someone else.
- Any indication a child has sent, or been asked for, sexual images.
- Any plan to meet someone known only online.
Talking to a child
The aim of a first conversation is to keep the child talking, not to establish facts. Formal interviewing is a specialist task and belongs to trained staff.
- Open questions. "Who do you play with most?" "What's the group like?" "Has anything online made you uncomfortable?"
- Do not lead. Avoid supplying names, acts or motives. "Did he ask you for photos?" can contaminate later evidence. "What did they ask you to do?" does not.
- Remove the fear of punishment first. Children stay silent mainly because they expect to lose the device or be blamed.
- Do not promise confidentiality you cannot keep.
- Write down what was said, in the child's words, with the time, as soon as you can.
The identifiers that matter
Names on these platforms can be changed in seconds. Numeric IDs cannot. A report that contains only a display name is frequently useless; one with a user ID can be acted on years later.
| Identifier | Stable? | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox display name | No. Freely changeable and not unique. | The large name on a profile. |
| Roblox username | Partly. Unique, but can be changed for a fee. | Shown with an @ on the profile. |
| Roblox user ID | Yes, permanent. | The number in the profile's web address: roblox.com/users/NUMBER/profile |
| Experience (place) ID | Yes. | The number in a game's address: roblox.com/games/NUMBER/… |
| Group ID | Yes. | The number in a group's address, under /communities/ or /groups/. |
| Item (asset) ID | Yes. | The number in a catalogue item's address. Limited items also carry a serial number. |
| Discord username | No. Changeable. | On the user's profile. |
| Discord user ID | Yes, permanent. | Settings → Advanced → turn on Developer Mode. Then right-click the user → Copy User ID. |
| Discord server ID and message link | Yes. | With Developer Mode on: right-click the server → Copy Server ID; right-click a message → Copy Message Link. |
Record the date and time zone alongside every identifier. Platforms keep logs for limited periods, so speed matters more than completeness.
Preserving evidence
Do
- Screenshot conversations with the web address, date and time visible where possible. On a phone, a second device photographing the screen is acceptable and sometimes better.
- Capture the profile pages of the accounts involved, including the address bar.
- Note the identifiers in the table above.
- Keep the device as it is. Leave accounts logged in if they already are.
- Keep a simple log: what you captured, when, from which device, and who has handled it since.
- Report promptly. A platform can preserve its own records on request from law enforcement, but only if asked before they expire.
Do not
- Do not copy, screenshot, save, forward or print sexual images of a child. In most countries that is itself a criminal offence, whatever the reason. Record where the image is and who sent it, secure the device, and tell the police.
- Do not delete the account, the messages or the app.
- Do not contact, confront or impersonate the suspect. It warns them, risks the child and can undermine a prosecution.
- Do not continue the conversation "to get more evidence".
- Do not search the device beyond what is needed to secure it, unless you are authorised to.
Where to report
Report to the platform and to the authorities. They are separate: a platform report removes an account, and only a police report starts an investigation.
| Where | What for |
|---|---|
| Local police / emergency number | Any immediate risk, a planned meeting, threats, or a child in possession of or shown sexual images. |
| Roblox | The Report Abuse option on a profile, in chat or in a game. Police forces should use Roblox's dedicated law-enforcement request channel rather than the public form. |
| Discord | In-app reporting on the message, using the message link. Law enforcement has a separate request process. |
| United States | NCMEC CyberTipline for child sexual exploitation. The FBI (tips.fbi.gov) for coercive networks and threats. IC3 for fraud. |
| United Kingdom | CEOP (part of the National Crime Agency) for online child sexual abuse. The Internet Watch Foundation for images. Report Remove, run by Childline and the IWF, lets under-18s have their own images taken down. |
| Canada | Cybertip.ca. |
| Australia | The eSafety Commissioner, and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation. |
| Elsewhere | The INHOPE network lists a national hotline for most countries. |
| Image removal, any country | NCMEC's Take It Down service helps remove sexual images of people who were under 18 when they were taken, without the image itself being uploaded. |
Saving a web page before it disappears
Reporting on this subject depends on pages that are routinely deleted: forum threads, videos, wiki articles, news sites that close. If a page matters to your work, assume it will not be there next year.
- Check for an existing copy. Put
web.archive.org/web/in front of the full address. - Make one if there is none. The Internet Archive's "Save Page Now" at
web.archive.org/savestores a public, dated copy.archive.todayis an independent alternative that handles some pages the first cannot. - Keep your own copy as well. Print to PDF, or save the complete page, with the address and date visible. Archives can be asked to remove pages.
- Record four things: the original address, the archive address, the date you accessed it, and one sentence on what it shows.
- For anything that may become evidence, also record a file hash of your saved copy so you can later show it has not been altered. On Windows:
Get-FileHash file.pdfin PowerShell. - Never archive a page containing sexual images of children, or personal details of a victim. Report it instead.
This site follows the same practice. Every source in the register carries an archive link, a note on how it was checked and a statement of what it supports, and the whole site can be downloaded as a single file that works offline.
Limits of this material
- It was compiled from public sources in October 2026. Policies, prices, slang and case outcomes will have moved on.
- Many dated legal and policy claims come from one tertiary source. See the register for the strength of each.
- Descriptions of community behaviour are observation, marked Observed in each article. They are a guide to what to look for, not findings.
- It covers one platform. The patterns are not unique to Roblox, and focusing on one app can mean missing the same behaviour on the next.
